Possibly Start with How My Girls Look a Lot Like Me
Genesis 5:1–3 NASB95
1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. 2 He created them male and female, and He blessed them and named them Man in the day when they were created. 3 When Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years, he became the father of a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth.
God was Made in God’s Likeness
But Seth was Made in Adam’s Likeness
Does this Mean that Seth Also Resembled God?
Or Does this Mean that Seth Inherited Adam’s Fallenness & Brokenness?
Matthew 22:18–20 (NET)
18 But Jesus realized their evil intentions and said, “Hypocrites! Why are you testing me? 19 Show me the coin used for the tax.” So they brought him a denarius.20 Jesus said to them, “Whose image is this, and whose inscription?”
Jesus Knew Exactly What They were Up to
He Asked Them to Show Him the Coin that would Be Used to Pay the Poll-Tax
They Brought Him a Denarius
It was a Silver Coin
The Amount a Day Laborer would Earn for a Day’s Work
Then They Ask Him Whose Image & Inscription is on the Coin
They’ll Answer in the Next Verse…
But Let’s Look at the Coin for Just a Minute
The Front of the Coin had the Image of Caesar
And the Inscription Read:
“Tiberius Caesar Augustus, Son of the Divine Augustus”
The Back of the Coin had the Image of a Seated Woman…
Possibly the Goddess Pax or Roma
The Inscription Around it Says “High Priest”
So, the Poll-Tax Alone was Bad Enough for the Jews
But to Add to that, the Money Used to Pay the Tax…
Has Images of Caesar & a Pagan Deity
And the Inscriptions Refer to the Son of God & High Priest
It was Blasphemous & Idolatrous
Matthew 22:21–22 (NIV)
21 “Caesar’s,” they replied. Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” 22 When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.
Jesus Didn’t Fall for the Trap By Answering “Yes” or “No”
“If it has Caesar’s Face & Name on it…”
“Then Obviously it Belongs to Caesar”
“Give it Back to Him”
They were Blown Away By this Answer
The Pharisees couldn’t Deny Who the Owner of the Coin was
And Jesus was Technically Encouraging the Jews to Pay the Tax…
So the Herodians Can’t Arrest Him for Treason
They Just Knew this Foolproof Plan would End with Jesus Offending Someone
But All They could Do Now is Walk Away
Jesus had Beaten Them
Jesus Said, “The Coin Bears Caesar’s Image, so Give it Back to Him”
But What Did He Mean By Give Back to God the Things that are God’s?
Well, What Bears His Image?
Humanity was Made in the Image of God (Genesis 1:26-27)
We were Made to Be like Him
Only Jesus Ever Succeeded in that
But Those Who Choose to Follow Jesus…
Are Being Sanctified & Transformed into His Image
We are Becoming God’s Image-Bearers…
As was Our Original Design
Every Time a Person was Given a Denarius…
They would See Caesar & Be Given a Description of Who He was
Every Time a Person Interacts with a Christian…
They should See God & Be Given a Description of Who He is
But that will Only Be the Case…
If We as Christians will Truly Give Ourselves Back to God
